Our semi normal life was ripped from its foundation on November 24th. This is the day our 3rd son was born, Levi Asher . Our life as, we knew it, was forever changed in a matter of seconds.
I was scheduled for my third c-section. The pregnancy, even at advanced maternal age, had been completely normal. The morning of November 24th, my husband and I arrived at the hospital and all was good. The nursing staff checked the baby’s heart beat and all my vitals. Everything looked great. From my hospital room, they wheeled me back to the delivery room. Everything went according to plan until delivery. When they removed Levi from my abdomen, he was blue and limp. The staff worked with him until they finally got a breath. I heard a small whimper before they inserted the ventilator.
The nurses saw seizure like activity, so they decided to transport him to another hospital NICU for head cooling. This procedure is when they cool the temperature of the brain down in hopes that it will repair itself from any brain damage done due to the lack of oxygen. But this was only the beginning of complications he faced.
I will never forget the first night I came home from the hospital without my baby. I sat in his nursery and wept. All his little clothes were neatly hanging in his closet, and his crib was waiting his arrival, all the while, my greatest fear was unfolding before my eyes. My child had nearly died and now he was struggling to survive. Would we ever get to bring him home?
